sclerometer (skli-ROM-i-ter) - n., an instrument for measuring the hardness of a material, especially a mineral.


The standard instrument for this was invented in 1896, and measuring either width of a scratch made by a standard diamond (or tungsten carbine) stylus applied at a standard pressure or the pressure needed to make the scratch with a standard stylus. The root is Greek sklērós, hard.
