mirabelle (MIR-uh-bel) - n., a small hardy European plum tree (cultivar of Prunus domestica subsp. syriaca) with finely toothed leaves and small cherry-shaped fruit; the fruit of this tree used in preserves and for making a liqueur; a brandy distilled from this fruit.
A specialty of Lorraine. The fruits are orange-to-reddish and supposedly very sweet -- I've never tasted one due to import controls, making them exceedingly rare in the United States. From French, but where the name come from there is a mystery to me.

Thanks, WikiMedia!
