buddleia or buddleja or buddlea (buhd-LEE-uh, BUHD-lee-uh) - n., any of several chiefly tropical and subtropical shrubs or trees of genus Buddleja cultivated for showy clusters of small, variously colored flowers.


Also called butterfly bush, because the butterflies love 'em. Named by Linnaeus after English botanist and cleric Adam Buddle (1662–1715), who specialized in bryophytes (the -ja was acceptable Latin suffixing at the time). The most common cultivar is B. davidii:
