subitize (SOO-bi-taiz) - v., to perceive the number of (a group of items) at a glance without counting.

And to do so rapidly, accurately and confidently. The limit that humans can subitize is about seven, with groups of more than four taking longer than four and under. More than seven, and we have to count, often by dividing the group into two subitizable subsets and rapidly adding. Coined in 1949 by E.L. Kaufman and co-authors from Latin subitus, sudden.
