nephoscope (NEF-uh-skohp) - n., an instrument for measuring the altitude, direction, and velocity of clouds.

Modern nephoscopes use the timing of reflected light to track cloud movement. All of these are different from a nephometer, which measures the amount of cloudiness. Coined in the 1880s from Greek roots nephos, cloud + -scope, from skopeƮn, to look.
