inveterate (in-VET-er-it) - adj., firmly and long established, deep-rooted; persisting in an ingrained habit, habitual.

Is often applied specifically to bad habits -- an inveterate liar -- so persisting despite it being a problem. Adopted around 1400 from Latin inveterātus, past participle of inveterāre, to grow old, from in- as in intensifier + veter-, stem of vetus, old -- so cognate of veteran. The problematic connotation didn't develop until the 17th century.
