potable (POH-tuh-buhl) - adj., fit to drink. n., (often pl.) a beverage.

As a noun, the connotation is often that alcohol is involved. That said, I usually see it as an adjective for water, saying that it is (or often is not) safe to drink from a given faucet. Dates to the mid-16th century, from Old French, from Late Latin pōtābilis, drinkable, from Latin pōtāre, to drink, from PIE *pō(i)-, to drink.
