pernette (PUHR-net) - n., a prop used to support pottery in a kiln, so as to expose the bottom of the piece to the full heat.


This word appears in no English dictionary aside from the OED, so above I just quoted their definition. (If I'da known this, I wouldn't have put it in the queue.) It of course appears in French dictionaries, since it was adopted from there -- itself adapted from Occitan perneta, Old Occitan pern, a big nail with large head.
