manavelins
Aug. 12th, 2021 07:27 ammanavelins (muh-NAV-uh-linz) - pl. n., miscellaneous scraps or small items, especially of food or gear.
Nautical slang from the early 19th century which has, albeit rarely, bled over into landside speech -- probably through Melville's use. Although always used only in this plural form, it's effectively a kind of collective noun. Like most nautical slang, the origin is entirely obscure.
(Not that this entry is self-descriptive or anything.)
