calyx (pl. calyces) - n., the collective of the sepals of a flower.


A sepal being of the usually green parts that surround and protect the flower bud and extend from the base of a flower after it has opened. So, the outer covering of a bud. From Greek kályx husk, covering, from kalýptein to veil, cover.
