horology (haw-ROL-uh-jee, hoh-ROL-uh-jee) - n., the science of measuring time; the art of making timepieces.


Where "timepieces" usually means specifically a mechanical clock, rather than an electronic chronometer. Coined in 1819 from Ancient Greek root hōro-, combining form of hōrā, hour + -logy, study -- and indeed, the earlier methods of keeping time rarely measured intervals smaller than an hour to any accuracy.

I've never heard the word "horologist" as much as when I listened to the S-Town podcast.
