woomera (WOOM-er-uh) - n., a wooden spearthrower used by Indigenous Australians.


Similar to an atlatl used in the Americas, it's a stick with a small hook on the end that rests in the end of the spear, but unlike an atlatl, the stick is typically (this varies) wide and thin, and sometimes curved like a bowl, and can even be used as a very narrow shield. The English word is from Dharuk (the language of the Port Jackson/Sydney area) wamara. A few examples:
