Theme week -- 5 x 5. That is, five days of five-letter words, starting with:
makai (muh-KAI) - adv., (Hawaii) toward the sea.
Seaward as opposed to in an inland direction. It is, obsv, a loanword from Hawaiian, and its opposite is mauka, inland -- from which you might deduce that ma is a particle or preposition indicating a direction and kai means sea, and you'd be right (specifically, it's a particle). It's been used by English speakers in Hawaii since the 19th century, but hardly at all elsewhere, a situation I'd like to rectify.
