contranym or contronym (KON-truh-nim) - n., a word with two opposing meanings.

Also called :takes deep breath: autantonym, auto-antonym, antagonym, self-antonym, enantionym, and Janus word -- that last from the Roman god who faces two directions at once. Common examples include cleave (cut in half or stick together), sanguine (cheerful or bloodthirsty), sanction (permit or penalize), and fast (quick or fixed in place). Coined as contronym in 1962 by Jack Herring from contro- + -nym on the model of synonym and antonym.
