paludal (puh-LOOD-l, PAL-yuh-dl) - adj., of, relating to, or occurring in marshes or fens.


The boggy bits. Can be applied to diseases such as malaria, which until mosquitoes were implicated the best guess was that it was caused by the marshy air. Alternate forms are palustral and palustrine -- ah, the joys of having multiple adjectival suffixes to chose from -- and TIL that there's paludiculture, agriculture and forestry in wetlands/peatlands. Coined around 1810 from Latin palūs (using its stem form, palūd-), marsh, of unknown origin.
