qua-bird or quabird (KWAW-bird) - n., the black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax).
Being a medium-sized heron found through most of Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Also used sometimes for either of the American night herons (genus Nyctanassa). Name is onomatopoeia for its call, matched in other languages such as Dutch kwak and Russian кваква. Nycticorax itself, btw, is from Ancient Greek, from nyktos, night + korax, raven, and the thought that these guys were being mistaken for ravens is delish:
