vireo (VIR-ee-oh) - n., any of various small insectivorous songbirds (family Vireonidae, especially genus Vireo) of the Americas and Southeast Asia, having grayish or greenish plumage.


The name is taken from a Latin name for some other greenish songbird that's not been definitively identified but was probably a greenfinch, said name being vireō, meaning "I am green," from virēre, to be green.
