rinatrix (rai-na-triks) - n., a supposed type of water snake believed to poison water.


In Medieval legends, anyway. First appears some time around 1240, give or take a decade, apparently the result of a scribal misreading of a passage in Lucan, specifically 9.720, where the modern reading is et natrīx, "and the water snake."

I love these kinds of evolutions by oops.
