kakorrhaphiophobia
Aug. 16th, 2022 07:32 amkakorrhaphiophobia (kak-uh-raf-ee-uh-FOH-bee-uh) - n., the abnormal fear of failure or defeat.
Just rolls right off the tongue, doesn't it? I can't see myself using it in public, worried that I'd mess up saying it -- which is a perfectly normal fear there, nothing kakorrhaphiophobic about it, 'k? There's a synonym, atychiphobia, but I think we can all agree that kakorrhaphiophobia is the superior word. From Ancient Greek roots, naturally, from kakorrhaphía, scheming/evil plot (from kakós, bad + rháptō, to sew -- a Homeric word fwiw) + -phóbos, fear. (Atychiphobia is from atukhḗs, unfortunate.)
