jaggery (JAG-uh-ree) - n., a coarse dark sugar esp. made from the sap of East Indian palm trees.

a lump of jaggery
Thanks, WikiMedia!

Can be from other sugar sources including cane, but usually then with some date or palm sugar mixed in. We got the word from Indo-Portuguese jágara, from either Malayalam śaṟkkara or Hindi/Urdu śakkar, both from Sanskrit śarkarā, candied or ground sugar, from PIE *ḱorkeh₂, gravel/boulder, so a cognate of sugar.
