contumacious (kon-too-MAY-shuhs, kon-tyoo-MAY-shuhs) - adj., obstinately disobedient or rebellious; insubordinate.


There's also a legal jargon sense (disobedient of a court order) but most of us don't need to worry about that one. There's a whole host of words for disobedience, enough for a theme week easily, but several would be repeats so I'll pass on that for now. This dates to the 1590s, from Latin contumāx, stubborn/obstinate, adjectival form of contemnō, I scorn/despise, from con-, here an intensifier +‎ temnō, I despise (from PIE *temh₁-, to cut).
