One dictionary tries to define it as "similar to indigo," another "a very deep shade of blue or purple." Roughly this              , depending on your monitor -- pretty groovy, actually. I can trace the whole etymology back through French, Latin, and Ancient Greek, but it ultimately means Persian and is not an endonym, being from Old Persian Pārsa, itself of Median origin.
