purlieu (PUR-loo, PURL-yoo) - n., an outlying or neighboring area, (in plural) outskirts, the environs; a place that one frequents.

Originally, a piece of land on the edge of a forest, esp. a piece restored to private ownership after having been included in a royal forest but still subject, in some respects, to the operation of the forest laws. In Middle English, it was purlewe (later altered under the influence of Old French lieu, place), an alteration of Anglo-French porale/purale, royal perambulation, from Old French porale, from poraler, to traverse, from por-, forth (from Latin prō-) + aller, to go.
