The amount of herring that fits in a box or barrel of standard size, typically about 1200 herrings, depending on size. Used by British North Sea fishers, at least formerly -- I suspect but have not confirmed that it's an outdated measure. From Scottish Gaelic crann, lot, which is not very helpful to know.
