rood (ROOD) - n., a unit of land measure equal to one quarter acre (0.10117 hectare).
Or more accurately, 40 square rods, the rod being unit of length used in surveying that has varied significantly over time but now settled at 16.5 feet, commensurate with that 40 square rods definition. Rood is also an alternate name for a rod, but I would completely ignore that complication were it not for the inconvenient detail that rood comes from rod via that alternate form: both are from Old English rōd, pole, especially originally a cross-bar or the cross itself, from Germanic roots.
And that's the end of a week of old odd units of measure ... that all happened to be four-letter words (did anyone notice?). I would usually say I'll be back next week with the usual mix, but because of the winter holidays, posting is likely to be erratic over the next couple weeks -- posting should return to the regular schedule starting in the new year. But what I do manage to put up will be usual mix.
