misophonia
Jan. 3rd, 2023 09:36 amOkay, back to work -- we got a new year and new words, starting with:
misophonia (mees-oh-FOH-nee-uh) - n., an extreme intolerance or hatred for certain sounds.
Such as chewing, slurping, ticking, etc. Sounds that trigger misophonics are usually repetitive and relatively soft. The buzzy hum of a dying fluorescent bulb can, after a while, set me off, but it's not immediate and other sounds also annoy me if heard for long enough, so I don't think I count. Coined in 2001 by audiologists Pawel J. and Margaret M. Jastreboff from Ancient Greek roots miso- (hate) + -phonia (sound).
