mazer (MAY-zer) - n., a type of medieval drinking bowl.

Used from the 11th through 16th century in northern Europe. Originally made from hardwoods such as maple, especially from a burl, but eventually also metal -- and even metal versions often had a central boss inside the bowl, a relic from when it was turned on a lathe. From Middle English, from Anglo-Norman, from Old French mazre/masere, a kind of maple wood, from a Germanic root.
