gouache (GWAHSH, goo-AHSH) - n., a watercolour paint made with gum containing an inert white pigment to make it opaque; a technique of painting with such a pigment; such a painting. v., to paint with gouache.

Used by Ancient Egyptians and in Persian miniatures, and in 16th century Italy. We got the word in the 1880s from French, this type of paint but originally any water-paint, from Italian guazzo, water-paint but originally puddle/mud, from Latin (probably via northern Gallo-Italic language) aquātiō, place with water, from aquātus, past participle of aquārī, to fetch water, from aqua, water.
