arrivederci (ahr-ree-ve-DER-chee) - n., till we meet again, see you later.


A non-definitive goodbye, one that implies a parting for now. So in my dialect, "bye" as opposed to "farewell," or in North American Spanish, "hasta la vista" as opposed to "adios." From Italian, an almost exact cognate of French au revoir, only instead of "to the seeing again" it's "to the seeing each other again," the -ci (or in infinitive form, -si) being a sort of reflexive pronoun (to oversimply it). I learned the word from Flanders & Swann, who in some intro patter quipped about a song called "Arrivederci Is My Advice to You." Of course, there's this other song:
