estoc (e-STOK, e-STAWK) - n., an edgeless thrusting sword used in Europe from the 14th-17th centuries.
Generally two-handed with a cruciform hilt, and always with a sharp point -- it was optimized for stabbing into armor, both plate and mail. Not needing to narrow to an edge meant the blade could be thicker and so stronger for thrusting. From Middle French estoc, from Old French estoc, the point of a sword, deverbal of Old French estoquer/estochier, to stab/thrust, from some West Germanic language stoken, to stab/pierce, both from Proto-West Germanic *stokōn, to be stiff/push/thrust.
