cheville (shuh-VEE) - n., (poe.) a redundant word or phrase used to fill out a balanced sentence or metered verse; (mus.) a peg of a stringed musical instrument.

Any metrical padding is a cheville. Frowned on in English verse, but in some traditions a standard tool in crafting verse. From French, both meanings, from Old French cheville, a peg of any kind, from Vulgar Latin *cavicla, alteration of Classical Latin clāvicula, diminutive of clāvis, peg/key (from a PIE root with a base sense of nail).

Oh, interesting! In French "cheville" means "ankle", mostly (and those two meanings plus a few others).
