whinyard (HWIN-yerd) - (obs.) n., a short sword.
Not necessarily a small-sword, but any short sword. This was apparently used in general English for a while, with the dialect variant whingar/whinger used for longer in north England and Scotland, all from the Middle English form whyneherd/whyneard -- after which the trail gets obscure, with one speculation being perhaps from Old English winn, contention/war + geard/gyrd, staff/rod/yard.
