haplotype (HAP-luh-taip) - n., a combination of closely linked DNA sequences on one chromosome that are often inherited together.


Or more technically, a group of alleles -- that is, a group of alternate forms of genes that are closely enough linked that they are typically don't get broken up when making gametes. Also, a verb, to characterize by haplotype. Tracking haplotypes is useful when tracing descent. Coined in the mid-1960s from Ancient Greek root haplo-, single + type.
