arbutus (ar-BYOO-tuhs) - n., any of a dozen species of broad-leaved evergreen trees or shrubs of the genus Arbutus with white or pink flowers and red or orange berries, native to warm temperate regions of the Americas and Europe; a creeping plant (Epigaea repens) fragrant pink or white flowers in early spring, native to eastern North America.

The genus includes madrone (a couple North American species) and strawberry tree (a Mediterranean/west Europe species). The creeper is also called creeping arbutus and ground laurel -- and unusually for these sorts of multiple use names, it actually is related to the genus: they're all members of the heath or heather family. The name comes from the Latin name for the strawberry team (A. unedo), origin entirely unknown.
