rataplan (rat-uh-PLAN) - n., a continuous, even drumming or rapping, as of the hooves of a drum, a galloping horse, or machine-gun fire.


Also a verb, to make such a sound. In use since 1848, and somewhat old-fashioned, from French ran tan plan, which is onomatopoeic.
