Such as from the urethra in an advanced infection of chronic gonorrhoea, but can also be from wounds or even nasal passages. Also used, medically, for an inflammation that produces such a discharge, and more generally for any slimy, viscous substance. This dates to the early 1300s in the form glete or glet, slimy or mucous matter, from Anglo-French glette, from Old French glette, from Latin glittus, sticky, akin to gluten, glue.
