teocalli (tee-uh-KAL-ee, tey-uh-KAH-lee) - n., a Mesoamerican ceremonial structure consisting of a terraced pyramid with a temple on top.

Commonly associated with the Aztecs but used by several other neighboring peoples. Teocalli can refer to the whole temple structure or the pyramid alone.

a teocalli, temple not visible
Thanks, WikiMedia!

We got the word from Spanish around 1610, who got it from probably Classical Nahuatl teohcalli, from teōtl, god + calli, house/building.

Administrivia: I'm off the rest of the week for the Stateside holiday -- posting resumes on Monday.
