limpkin (LIMP-kin) - n., a large brownish wading bird (Aramus guarauna) of warm American wetlands, having long legs, a curved bill, and a distinctive wailing call.

Looks rather like a bittern or rail, but in the size of a small crane -- and most closely related to cranes than anyone else. Named for its halting, undulating gait, which makes it look like it's limping, plus diminutive suffix -kin. The name still makes me think that ... something ... is limp.
