costrel - n., a flat, pear-shaped flask, usually made of leather or earthenware, with loops to suspend it from a belt.


Also called a pilgrim bottle, though I didn't know that till just now. From Middle English, from Anglo-French, from Old French costerel, equivalent to from costier, at the side, from coste, rib, from Latin costa -- and so cognate of coast.
