nocent (NOH-suhnt) - adj., harmful; (obs.) guilty.

The little-known stem of its antonym, innocent, where in- is that Latin variant of un-. The original 15th century Middle English sense, linked to innocent, was guilty, but the surviving sense is closer to its etymology: Latin nocent-, the stem form of nocēns, present participle of nocēre, to injure/harm. (Compare nocuous, the stem of its antonym, innocuous.)
