austringer (AW-strin-guhr) - n., a hawker.

That is, someone who hunts with hawks or eagles rather than falcons -- originally, specifically, someone who hunts with the short-winged hawks, such as the goshawk, of the genus Accipiter. From which latter comes the name: ultimately from Latin accipiter, hawk, after passing through a couple medieval Latin and French vowel changes. Hunting with falcons was, in Europe, generally higher class than with hawks (though claims that there were specific birds for social station was a spurious late invention).
