Theme week! Admittedly a shortened one -- sorry 'bout that -- but I've got a run of four animals in my queue, just waiting to entertain and edify us all, starting with:

gourami (goo-RAH-mee) - n., any of numerous freshwater fish of Southeast Asia (family Osphronemidae) caught for food and kept as pets.

Plural is also gourami, unless you're talking about multiple species, in which case it's gouramis (similar to fish). Gourami can breathe (well, gulp) air, which is a useful skill when you live in brackish water, and many species built bubble nests. The family includes many common aquarium fish such as bettas and paradise fish, but those are generally not referred to as gourami. The name comes from Malay, from Javanese graméh.
