kabocha - n., a variety of Japanese winter squash.


A nearly spherical relative of buttercup squashes, which was introduced to Japan via Cambodia by the Portuguese, who called it Cambodia abóbora -- shortened in Japanese to kabocha (Portuguese -"dia" being pronounced very closely to Japanese "-cha"). In Japanese, the word is also used for pumpkins in general.

Also, quite tasty.

Our soon-to-be-former-Sometimes Roommate cooked a couple Thai custards by steaming them inside hollowed out kabochas. Winter squash with edible skin for the win, with bonus sweet flesh and sideways-tasting Thai yumminess.
