lucre (LOO-ker) - n., money, monetary gain or reward.


Typically seen in the Official Management Term of "filthy lucre," which first appeared in the Tyndale translation of 1 Timothy 3:3 and carried over into the King James Version -- and as a result, the word itself has a somewhat pejorative connotation. Lucre itself was adopted in the 14th century from Latin lucrum, profit.
